Credit card fee reductions for small business owners
As part of its efforts to support small businesses, the federal government negotiated to reduce domestic Visa and Mastercard interchange fees in-store and online for eligible small businesses as of October 19. As a result of these changes, more than 90 per cent of businesses that accept credit cards will receive lower rates and see interchange fees reduced by up to 27 per cent - saving approximately $1 billion in the next five years. Saving Alberta farmer's time and money
Changes to Agriculture Financial Services Corporation's (AFSC) AgriStability program will reduce paperwork and lower costs for producers.
Farmers are vital to Alberta's economy, providing essential food resources and driving rural prosperity, yet they often face burdensome paperwork and high accounting fees that hinder their productivity. Governments are making changes to the AgriStability program to address these challenges.

Advocacy in Action
Local Chamber Influences National Priorities with the adoption of three policies
We were pleased to attend the Canadian Chamber AGM and annual convention in Halifax, Nova Scotia with our Alberta Chamber delegation. Alberta carried 33% of the national Chamber voting delegation with 103 Chambers represented in person or by proxy. In addition to the Chamber's Executive Director receiving her Level 3 accreditation certification renewal, the delegates participated in sessions on:
- the Pan-Canadian Chamber Forum to discuss how to elevate and leverage the power of the national network
- Unleashing the Power of Creativity in Business
- Bold Strategies for Canada's Economic Future
- Addressing the Productivity Conundrum
- The U.S. Election and the Bilateral Relationship
- Economic Outlook for Small Business
Delegates also actively engaged in the policy resolution debate, where 46 policies were brought to the floor for debate and consideration. All three of the Southeast Alberta Chamber policies were adopted including:
- Improving the Regulatory Environment for Natural Health Products
- Supporting Farms of the Future
- Commercial Border Crossing Access
While Chambers are only able to bring two resolutions each year to be considered a national priority, the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce was pleased to work with the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce to ensure we had a policy to improve access to designated commercial offices in our western provinces.Â
Of the 46 policies debated, 40 were adopted by the delegates for the Canadian Chamber to include in their policy priorities and advocacy initiatives.Â
Why this matters: by having delegates gather to discuss, debate and adopt policy priorities that matter to their local business community, but are of national significance, it helps to further our efforts by local Chambers from Coast to Coast to Coast to improve the business and regulatory environment in our regions and communities and make a more sustainable and thriving future. By leveraging our national Chamber network to support federal priorities of regional importance to our local communities, we can influence the Government in their future policy decisions and direction.Â
It is truly inspiring to see, feel and be part of the 'power of the network' and the value we bring to Canadian business, locally, provincially and federally.
WestJet | Calgary to Medicine Hat (YYC-YXH) flight time change
Following WestJet's recent community and business roundtables in Medicine Hat, WestJet received valuable feedback regarding the return flight time from YYC-YXH. With the late departure at 23:40 being less than ideal for many travellers, especially business commuters, WestJet is adjusting flight times to address this concern.
Effective December 5th, the evening departure will shift from 23:40 to 18:35. This adjustment not only enhances crew efficiency but also provides a more convenient schedule for business travellers and allows travellers returning to Medicine Hat to connect through Calgary from 30+ destinations in our network reducing long layovers in Calgary. The new flight times will run throughout the winter schedule, and this change will be officially published on October 20th.
Advertising campaign to oppose cap on energy production
Alberta has launched a national advertising campaign in response to the federal government's proposed oil and gas production cuts.
The campaign, which runs from mid-October to the end of November, directs visitors to a website that includes a letter than can be sent electronically to their Member of Parliament. Research by the Conference Board of Canada, Deloitte and S&P Global found that Alberta's GDP will decline by 4.5 per cent by 2040 and the loss of 150,000 jobs if the proposed policy is approved.
