Free trade agreement between Canada and Ecuador

Once ratified, the agreement will enhance Canada's trade diversification strategy, providing new opportunities for Canadian businesses. In 2022, Ecuador was the sixth-largest economy in South America with a population of 18 million and a GDP of $118.84 billion (2023). From 2018 to 2023, Canadian foreign direct investment in Ecuador tripled to $4.4 billon, making Canada one of the largest foreign investors in Ecuador. Since the launch of Canada’s Trade Diversification Strategy in 2017, Canada has accelerated its efforts, resulting in 15 Free Trade Agreements covering 51 countries and representing nearly two thirds of global GDP. Mapping groundwater in Southern Alberta

Alberta’s government is providing a $3.8-million grant to the Alberta Geological Survey to complete a three-year study mapping the quality, quantity and location of groundwater across southern Alberta. Better understanding this groundwater will help the province make the most out of every drop to support families, business, farmers and ranchers and the environment. Find out more.

Brooks-Newell News

Brooks Business workforce Roundtable

Executive Director, Lisa Dressler and Naomi Zacharias, Business Development Coordinator hosted two workforce roundtables, generously supported by the Medicine Hat College Brooks Campus on February 13 with close to 20 businesses and organizations in attendance.

We discussed the workforce skills gaps that exists and the various supports, services and programs available in the region.

Interestingly there are more job seekers than jobs available, which makes the disconnect in filling the needs that much more challenging. Through the discussions, we determined actions and next steps including:

BusinessRoundtable-logo
  1. Communication and awareness of grants and supports;
  2. Advocacy for some of the gaps that exist as well as advocacy to promote academy models and address transportation needs;
  3. Communication and awareness about programs and services available for employers
  4. A deeper dive on data to find out about more specific needs and matching employers to what they need

There was also strong support for career days and skills days to promote education of careers to Youth. We are planning our next event in the Brooks-Newell region for March 24, so stay tuned to the events calendar for further details.

Support for Rising Insurance Costs

Rising insurance costs are putting financial pressure on community groups that provide essential services and programs in the County. To help ease this burden, the County of Newell is developing a program to cover insurance deductibles for not-for-profit organizations, ensuring they can continue operating without the risk of sudden, unmanageable expenses. Supporting these groups means stronger local programs, events, and services that benefit everyone

Southeast Alberta Vulnerable to Tariffs

Tariffs are the most urgent threat facing Canadian and American businesses today. Modelling from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce's Business Data Lab suggests that these tariffs would come at a huge economic cost, reducing real annual income by $1,900 CAD per Canadian and $1,300 USD per American.

To empower the Canadian and American businesses and stakeholders who are working hard to grow our best-in-class trade relationship, the Business Data Lab launched its Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker. The interactive and customizable online tool highlights the deep and vital economic interconnections at the state, province, territory and Canadian Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs).

“Tariffs are a lose-lose. They would raise business costs, reduce North America’s international competitiveness, and ultimately increase consumer prices at a time when Canadians and Americans are both struggling with significant affordability challenges,” says Stephen Tapp, Chief Economist at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

“The dynamic and localized information available in the Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker will help government leaders, businesses and citizens on both sides of the border better understand these critical cross-border linkages and then make the case to decision-makers that we should strengthen rather than break these mutually beneficial ties.”

“If President Trump wants to win for Americans, he shouldn’t be taxing the steel and aluminum that the American defence, manufacturing, aerospace and energy industries rely on. The only thing that’s “America First” about these self-defeating tariffs is who pays first. Moving forward with 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum is wrong on many levels, and we’ve already seen how this plays out — analysis by experts in the United States shows that the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed in the first Trump administration have raised costs for American manufacturers and prices for consumers. Instead, by removing tariffs from these industries, the United States could finally benefit from the expected job growth and GDP increase that would come with less trade barriers.” stated Candace Laing, President and CEO, Canadian Chamber of Commerce in a recent statement.

Canada is the largest export market for 34 states, reaching all the south way to Mississippi and Florida with each province and territory having its own special trade relationship with many American states.

For Alberta, Illinois is our top American trading partner, followed by Texas and Washington with $187,969 million in trade between US and Alberta.

There are 355,598 Canadian jobs are supported by Alberta’s exports to the U.S. with 5,365 companies in Alberta that export to the U.S.

Minerals, Chemical, Agriculture including live animals and products, as well as plastics and machinery are our top five export products include with similar import products including minerals, machinery, vehicles, chemicals and food & beverage products.

We know Alberta is most one of the top 3 provinces most at risk from tariffs due to their economic reliance on U.S. exports and dependence on the U.S. as a key export market.

With the up-to-date state of the relationship on full display through the Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker, it’s undeniable: we do better together. Find out more

Intro to the Trades

Prairie Rose Public Schools and Medicine Hat Public School District with help from CAREERS are bringing our Trades students to one place at one time on April 8th in the hopes that our students will be able to get jobs for the summer. These grade 10 students are part of a dual-credit course called Intro to Trades with the Medicine Hat College. They are on track to either get into RAP or a pre-employment program to be able to graduate high school with the first full year of a registered apprenticeship. By April, students will have had one full-day instructional lab in seven trades: carpentry, pipe trades, welding, auto-service tech, heavy equipment tech, electrical and power engineering (connected to trades).

There will be approximately 40 students at this event and many of these students may be able and willing to continue working once summer ends.
