On Sunday February 23, Teck Resources Ltd announced it would be withdrawing its application for the Teck Frontier Project. The announcement was unfortunate news for Albertans and unfortunate news for all Canadians. This project was set to create thousands of jobs and 70 billion dollars in revenue.

The CEO of Teck Resources Ltd. addressed the Minister of Enviroment & Climate Change, Jonathan Wilkinson:

“The promise of Canada’s potential will not be realized until governments can reach agreement around how climate policy considerations will be addressed in the context of future responsible energy sector development. Without clarity on this critical question, the situation that has faced Frontier will be faced by future projects and it will be very difficult to attract future investment, either domestic or foreign. “

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has created both the Regulate Smarter and Roadmap to Prosperity campaigns where they address the dynamic between climate change and innovation.

“Climate change is real and we all have a role to play in addressing it, but Canada’s response to the challenge cannot drive away the investors, job creators and innovators that contribute to Canada’s prosperity, and the resources that will fuel the innovation required to combat climate change,”

This news comes on the heels of the nearly 3 weeks of rail blockades in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs opposing the Coastal GasLink pipeline project.

The Provincial Government and the Federal Government have both released statements in response.
